This classic skull and roses arrangement originated from an illustration by British artist Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933)  for a 1913 illustrated publication. Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly adapted the design by redrawing it and taking it psychedelic in a 1966 Grateful Dead poster. It’s now a ubiquitous graphic for all things Grateful Dead.
