Originally created by Stanley Mouse in 1991 as cover art for Sandy Troy’s One More Saturday Night: Reflections with the Grateful Dead, this image represents a later chapter in the visual language surrounding the Grateful Dead.
The figure—part ringmaster, part skeleton, part myth—draws from Mouse’s recurring Big Boss Man motif, an image that evolved across multiple iterations and became closely associated with the band’s extended visual identity beyond the classic poster era.
In carving this piece, the composition reveals its structure through depth: the arc, the gesture, the balance between figure and ornament. The theatricality of the image translates into form, where movement and control must coexist.
As the opening work in The Eleven Collection, it establishes a tone—iconic, constructed, and unmistakably part of a larger visual mythology.
